Announcements for Oct 28, 2022

October 28, 2022

From the Board President

Hi All,

It's "game week" - I hope everyone is ready for a great concert!

We've been working with Connally to finalize next week and we've pretty much got everything in order.

As I mentioned in the last rehearsal, here are the specifics for us:

  • Tuesday night is a regular rehearsal

  • Thursday is Dress Rehearsal (in regular clothes) from 7-10

    • We will be on the PAC Stage so we can get a feel for how it will be on Sunday

    • For setup, Connally plans to have most equipment (chairs/stands/basic percussion) on the stage so it will be easier to set up

    • Setup will start at 6:15PM with the Flutes in charge

      • Kevin Jedele will be there around the same time to help with the setup (numbers for each row, etc.)

    • Anyone else who can make it to help set up would be great

  • Sunday is the Concert

    • Call-Time is 2:30 ready to play

    • Connally wants us to keep everything in place from Thursday so setup will be minimal

    • If anything needs to be adjusted, Trumpets are in charge of setup that can start at 1:45PM

    • Connally will also have a room set up for us to put cases so they are not backstage

So that's about it. I hope everyone has a great weekend and I'll see y'all Tuesday.

From the Community Engagement Committee

Details are emerging for our next effort with the Connally Cougar Band.

In the next couple of weeks Matthew and his team will be putting together some small ensembles for a concert in the winter and to start preparing for Solo and Ensemble contests in the spring. So far he thinks there will be a Clarinet Choir, a Sax quartet, two Brass quintets, a Brass ensemble (essentially a Brass quintet plus Euphonium), and maybe a Woodwind quintet.

His vision is that ensemble coaches from ASB would be introduced middle to late November, and start working with the groups in December. He thinks one session every two weeks would be good. The Band class runs from 9-11am, with students arriving by 8 for extra rehearsals. So in general the coaching sessions will be in the morning during that time.

As we get closer to a concert in February, staying after school might come in play. He generally only runs that to 6pm only.

More details as they become apparent! Remember, if you are interested in helping with this effort or future efforts supporting the Connally Band, you need to fill out a volunteer application located here: Volunteer / Volunteering in PfISD. Once approval is obtained, forward to Ren at Ren.macnary@gmail.com and Matthew Garrison at Matthew.garrison@pfisd.net.

Thanks to all who have already volunteered as we continue to build our relationship with our host band!

From the Music Director

Greetings ASB!

Great work this past Tuesday - with concert week here, we will rehearse in performance order on Tuesday, and at our dress rehearsal on Thursday.

Our plan will be to run each piece, then stop to address any particular issues. Times below are approximate, but should give you a sense of how the evening will be paced.

REHEARSAL PLAN

7:30 Tune

7:35 Washington Post — John Philip Sousa

7:42 Eine Kleine Yiddishe Ragmusik — Adam Gorb

7:55 "Beautiful Dreamer” from Foster’s America — David Gillingham

8:00 American Hymnsong Suite — Dwayne S. Milburn

8:20 Break

8:30 "Exhilaration and Cry” from Southern Harmony — Donald Grantham

8:40 We May Rise — Elaine Hagenberg/arr. Hazzard

8:55 Armenian Dances (Pt. 1) — Alfred Reed

9:30 Rehearsal ends

As we approach the finish line for this concert, I encourage you to keep up with your parts (find the “hard stuff” and give that some attention, run a piece and count your rests so you get a feel of the endurance needed, listen to the recordings casually to keep thematic in your head, etc.) and I’ll see you all Tuesday!

Thanks!
