Third ANNUAL YOUNG COMPOSERS’ CONTEST

The Austin Symphonic Band is seeking new band works crafted by emerging young composers. Candidates are encouraged to submit previously-composed works for large ensemble which will then be reviewed by a panel of adjudicators. The winning composer will receive a financial prize and be commissioned to write a new piece for concert band, which will receive its premiere at an ASB concert in the 2025–2026 season.
Eligibility
Any composer of any nationality who is 30 years of age or younger as of the entry closing date, November 1, 2024.
Requirements
$25 non-refundable entry fee
Complete online application
Submit conductor scores (PDF) and audio recordings (YouTube) of two pieces you previously composed that showcase your writing abilities for large instrumental ensembles (e.g., concert band, full orchestra). Recordings may be of a live ensemble or MIDI/computer generated audio files.

Contact information for three professional references who may be contacted in the final round of adjudication.
Timeline & Process
The online application portal is now open.
Deadline for receipt of entry materials is November 1, 2024.
A panel of judges will review all entries and contact references; the winning composer will be notified by December 15, 2024.
The winning composer will be given a contract (see Sample Contract, below) and will consult with the ASB Music Director regarding availability and strengths of particular instruments/sections.
Deadline for the completed piece (full score and set of parts) is September 1, 2025.
The winning composition will be programmed on an ASB concert during its 2025–2026 season
Prize
$2,500 financial award
Airfare/travel stipend (up to $500)*
Four nights lodging to attend dress rehearsal and concert*
* Distributed only if the winning composer can attend.
